Sugawara et al., (2022)では、ミトコンドリアDNAのデータに基づき本種は広島県東広島市、竹原市、呉市にも分布し、一部地域ではヒロシマサンショウウオと同所的に生息するとされていたが、Tomimori et al., (2023)の核DNAを用いた研究でそれは否定された[7][8]。
